About two years ago I had an idea to build a new form of presenting picture frames.
I was looking for a new mode of employment which would also give satisfaction
of having produced something rather than the old way of supplying a service to
people who just wanted to stay home and watch TV, being a TV tetchy.
My brother Bill is a craftsman at woodturning and spends his retirement making
things on his lathe and that got me interested to try something out with wood as
I loved the look of his finished turnings,he also helped out with ideas ,hints and tips on working with wood and the project it’s self, also with some of the tools I didn’t have to get the job finished. So I just wanted to say thanks to my big brother who is in hospital as I write. You’ve been an inspiration to me in more ways than one could imagine and have been there when I needed you.
I decided to build a dodecahedron just big enough to put reasonable size photos in and the result is what you see(click Images). Then came the idea to make the other platonic solids in the same way so that’s under
developement .It’s facinating that these five shapes are the only ones possible out of
sides which have equal lengths and equal angles. The five for those who don’t know are
the tetrahedron, cube, dodecahedron, octahedron ,icosahedron and have 4,6,8,12 and 20 sides respectively.
It is said that geometrical analysis proves that these are the only shapes possible having
sides of symetry .They have also been used in the study of astronomy by a guy called Kepler who was a mathematician and are related to the ancient concept of the nature of matter or classic elements. It is hoped that some will be motivated to try building similar things .I will be providing the how to for those in need of that, as I used simple tools , modified some and built jigs in the process of discovery of the best way to put this together . You could probably find a solution somewhere but I decided to work it all out for myself and that’s satisfying. So I’ll be putting together the plans which is not really all that hard except for one or two aspects which took a while to figure out, not having worked with wood nearly to this degree.Keep watching for that in the future.
CHEERS, Rob.

Welcome to PLATONICPICTUREFRAMES.
The Dodecahedron pictureframe is an idea that came probably as a result of seeing different ways of presenting multiple family photos in one unit like the little cubes and flipover stands etc. you come across in home lounge rooms. I was hopeless at English and literature but took to Geometry and Algebra pretty easily so maybe that is why there is some interest here. Putting this thing together though didn’t come easy as there was a bit of lost knowledge and a whole lot never heard of before i.e. we were never told about the Platonic solids at our school, maybe the teachers thought it was above us or something. I only learned about the solids in my 40′s. but that’s life, you only learn what you really need to know if you chase it down yourself.
